Recent years have witnessed an increased understanding of the extent of the palliative care needs of babies, children and young people.

Since 2014 Diana Children’s Nurses (DCN) have been employed to build capacity in palliative care services for children. The overarching aim of the DCN service is that ‘Babies, Children and Young People in Scotland will have access to palliative care when and where they need it.’

CHAS and NHS Highland are looking to build on the success of our existing Diana Children’s Nursing service and recruit a full time Diana Children’s Nurse to support families across the region.

Employed by CHAS and embedded within children’s services in Raigmore Hospital and Argyle and Bute Health Social Care Partnership this will enable close working not only with the hospital and community teams, but with the CHAS hospice, at home and family support teams.

This collaborative approach creates a seamless service to families. The DCN is at the heart of making sure families facing the death of their child do so with the very best care and support around them.

Key Responsibilities

Direct work with families to support the palliative care needs of children

Workforce capacity building to develop the knowledge, skills and experience of public sector and voluntary sector staff to address the palliative care needs of children

Strategic influencing and leadership to steer policy and practice change at organisational, health board and national levels.

Each of these areas of work is important in terms of increasing support for children.

About You

You will be a dynamic children’s nurse with a minimum of five years relevant clinical experience. This will include the skills, experience and compassion to lead and deliver exceptional palliative care to babies, children and young people and their families. Effective leadership skills are also required to influence and negotiate with people from all levels of society.

About CHAS

At CHAS, our ambition is to reach every family in Scotland who is living with the heart-breaking prognosis that their child is dying, and offer them our care and support to empower them to make the most of the short time they have together. As a Diana Children’s Nurse, you will be instrumental in achieving this vision.
