Are you ready to shape the future of hospice care for hundreds of thousands of adults and children?

Havens Hospices is proud of its heritage – from its founding in 1983 by a group of local Christians, the creation of the first children’s hospice in south east England to the first organisation to secure joint HAQU accreditation for its adult and children’s care, our achievements are something to be proud of.

But now we’re looking forward. A new, purpose built adult hospice is on the horizon, transition care is a hot topic, palliative care in the community is expanding and the way we secure statutory funding is changing.

The Director of Care/Executive Nurse will lead the charity through these changes, pioneering the specialist care only our hospices provide in the area and maintaining the highest professional standards for all of the nursing and care staff at Havens Hospices. But, most of all, taking responsibility to ensure we’re ‘Making every day count’ for everyone we care for.
We are looking for a Director of Care who will:
• Exercise Director level responsibility for the entire range of both adult and children’s in-patient and community hospice care services and actively support Managers in the delivery of palliative and end of life care in the ‘universal’ services
• As the ‘Head of Profession’, oversee the professional practice of all the Charity’s nursing and care staff and ensure it is maintained to the highest standards
• Work with the Chief Executive, Executive and the Trustees in exercising leadership in the organisation and contributing to its overall strategy
• Fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the Caldicott Guardian in safeguarding and controlling the flow of patient identifiable information within the Charity and to other services and providers
• Utilise the expertise, knowledge and experience of the staff and volunteers to deliver the Directorate’s business objectives and maintain its external accreditations and statutory registration with the Care Quality Commission
• Exercise Director level responsibility for internal and external Quality Assurance initiatives
• Exercise Director level responsibility for the development and co-ordination of palliative care education

This is a demanding role, requiring excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to foster good working relationship with the Trustees, Executive, and staff and volunteers across the whole organisation; and with external organisations and partners.

You will have a proven track record gained from exercising a lead role at senior or board level. Your vast understanding of current clinical practice and systems of governance will help you be prepared to exercise the skills and competencies required to meet the demands of the role as it continues to evolve over time.
A team player, equally comfortable with major strategic issues and operational details, you will be a Registered Nurse, educated to degree level. Particular knowledge of palliative and end of life care is essential.
