“Sometimes love lasts a moment. Sometimes love lasts a lifetime. Sometimes a moment is a lifetime”
Rebecca and Ryan’s much longed for and much loved baby boy, Teddy Ray, died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at only four months old. As a family they will always love and remember Teddy. Setting up Teddy’s Butterfly Tribute Fund was an extension of this.
Sarah-Jane’s children were cared for by Rebecca at the nursery they attended and they had formed a strong bond.
Sarah-Jane said “Rebecca is an incredible young woman who is truly gifted when it comes to caring for children. She always goes the extra mile to ensure they are all cared for impeccably. Everyone was delighted when Rebecca announced she was expecting a little boy, as she so longed for a child of her own. There were tears shed from both parents and the children when Rebecca's maternity leave started, we wished her every happiness.
We were all broken hearted to learn of Teddy's passing at just 14 weeks of age. It seemed so desperately unfair as he was so loved, truly a precious gift for Ryan and Rebecca.” says Sarah.
“Eventually Rebecca returned to work and despite her obvious heart ache she continued to care for our children with so much love and devotion.”
Devastated for Rebecca and Ryan; Sarah-Jane wanted to do something in memory of Teddy Ray. She got together a group of friends who also wanted to do something to help and they decided to take on a challenge to honour Teddy’s memory and raise money for their chosen charity - Team Teddy Ray was born.
“I've always enjoyed running and when I saw the advertisements for The Bupa Great Manchester I decided to enter and rope in a few friends for good measure. It really was a very proud day for all of Team Teddy as we lined up on that hot Sunday morning in May 2012. The team is full of characters and we certainly had a good giggle along the way!”
Rebecca and Ryan followed the team every step of the way. On race day they were joined by Teddy’s mamma and uncle, as well as Team Teddy’s children, affectionately known as the 'Teddyettes' to cheer on the team.
“We were all in tears as we saw them cheering for us as we ran hand in hand towards the finishing line.” Said Sarah. “What a moment! I'm just so pleased that the team could make a difference and help Teddy's memory live on and strong in the hearts of all who knew him. I know Teddy has touched the hearts of many who didn't know him too. Despite living for just a short time, Teddy Ray brought more love and pleasure to his family than thought possible and he continues to do so. His legacy is love.”
Team Teddy Ray is meeting up in September to celebrate their achievement. They are already thinking about what they can do next. With the generosity of friends and family they smashed their fundraising target – adding over £2,000 to Teddy Ray’s Butterfly Tribute fund. Donations in his name are already reaching out to help families get the support they need for every step of their journey.
Fundraising in memory of Teddy Ray has been such a positive experience and has made a real difference to Rebecca and Ryan; to Sarah-Jane and her friends; and to our work in helping children get the best possible care, wherever and whenever they need it.
