About the Role

The Care Services Director at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice will be a dynamic, passionate and experienced clinician, working alongside our Chief Nurse, leading our hospice care services to fulfil our phased plan to a fully nurse-led service.

As part of the Strategic Leadership Team, they will bring their strategic thinking, working collaboratively with fellow directors to help shape the future of Bluebell Wood.

The Care Services Director will inspire others to follow them, creating a culture where the service experience is relentlessly pursued to make things effortless for our children and young people, families, supporters, partners and colleagues; accessing a curious mindset to explore how we can improve, grow and develop to have even greater impact.

The salary for this role is £65,000-£70,000, plus the opportunity to remain in the NHS pension (if applicable).

About You

You will be a registered nurse, be clinically credible and able to make clinical decisions.

You’ll have experience of senior or board level management in a clinical setting and experience of managing compliance with CQC and safeguarding legislation.

You’ll have line management experience and considerable understanding of the development of strategic plans in a health or social care setting.

About us

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice are recruiting for a Care Services Director to provide knowledgeable, professional and inspirational leadership to our clinical & family support services teams. Working closely with our Chief Nurse the post holder will ensure the strategic development of our care services and will take the lead on the operational delivery of our plans.

JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE OF POST: Care Services Director

ACCOUNTABLE TO: CEO

JOB PURPOSE: You will be responsible for leading and managing our care services to ensure effective, safe, exceptional quality care and support for babies, children, young people and their families.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • You will offer strong, visible leadership to our care teams ensuring effective management, organisation and delivery of responsive, individualised care which provides real choice for babies, children, young people and their families.
  • You will be an effective link between the hospice and the key regulatory bodies that monitor our care, as well as providers. You will also be focused on embedding a quality improvement culture at the hospice.
  • You will be responsible for developing services according to local need, ensuring effective partnership working with other organisations to share resources and expertise.
  • The post holder has responsibility for ensuring that all clinical services comply with regulatory and legislative standards as the Registered Manager.
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will work collaboratively to shape the strategic direction of the hospice and ensure that our aims and objectives are delivered by integrating and delivering a joined-up service.
  • Strategic Management
  • Contribute to the strategic shaping of the organisation, ensuring that Hospice services develop and integrate with future national and regional provision of children and young peoples palliative care.
  • Hold overall responsibility for the provision of excellent care and clinical effectiveness across all services, encouraging integration, innovation and best use of resources.
  • Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement
  • As Registered Manager, ensure the Hospice complies with and surpasses the CQC standard and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure efficient data collection from all clinical areas that demonstrates activity and impact.
  • Analyse and identify trends in clinical activity and impact and report on relevant trends and outcomes to directors, Board, partners and funders as required.
  • Contribute to the Quality, Performance and Compliance subcommittee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Working with the Clinical Director and other relevant senior staff, review the clinical care policies and procedures and conduct clinical benchmarking and evaluation of services through robust clinical governance systems.
  • Communication and External Relationships
  • Develop relationships with a wide range of local, regional and national bodies in the public and voluntary sector, representing the Hospice in discussions and plans for care development and funding.
  • People Management
  • Lead on future workforce planning with the HR team, ensuring a clinical workforce (staff and volunteers) that is able to deliver effective services. Ensure efficient and appropriate recruitment of clinicians.
  • Provide leadership for our care staff, ensuring robust systems for staff support, appraisal, development and clinical supervision. Foster a supportive culture that encourages the highest possible standards of professional conduct. Manage team members, where there are issues of poor performance by providing support and implementation of relevant hospice policies.
  • Management of Budgets and Financial Resources
  • Manage the clinical budget to ensure the best use of resources to support the highest quality of care for those who need it. Take the lead in the annual budget setting process for clinical services.
  • Education and Training Responsibilities
  • Ensure all members of the care teams are appropriately trained and supported, receiving regular appraisals and access to appropriate developmental opportunities.
  • Promote and consider proposals for audit and research projects involving care staff which contributes to the body of research on EOLC.
  • Regularly review the training needs of care staff. Working closely with the Clinical Director and key senior staff, ensure the hospice has a programme of education and learning that develops the competencies and confidence of clinical staff.
  • Act as a resource, advisor and role model to care colleagues in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care.
  • Demonstrate own commitment to lifelong learning, undertaking own professional development in accordance with requirements of relevant professional body, maintaining high levels of clinical / leadership expertise.

MANAGERS OF STAFF AT BLUEBELL WOOD ARE EXPECTED TO:

  • Take part in inductions for new team members and for staff returning from long absence
  • Lead and guide staff, providing the support needed to maintain morale and enable them to work effectively
  • Supervise your staff members appropriately in their day-to-day work and actively work to recognise the work that they do
  • Carry out regular 1:1s and schedule team meetings as appropriate
  • Undertake annual appraisals with your staff members, assisting them in the preparation of Personal Development Plans
  • Support appropriate staff learning and development within your team
  • Communicate effectively with your team
  • Play a role in the recruitment of new staff within your area, once appropriate training has been given
  • Manage sickness absence fairly and effectively
  • Manage performance issues fairly and consistently, taking advice from the HR team where appropriate

Qualifications
Essential

  • Qualifications/ TrainingHealth professional qualification or qualification and/or experience which demonstrates aptitude to perform role of leading a healthcare service
  • Degree in relevant subject area

Experience:

  • Successful leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams *Developing effective working relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Proven experience of managing change
  • Experience of volunteering and/or managing a team of volunteers
  • Working with and successfully influencing Trustees
  • CQC inspections and/or managing CQC relationship
