New films explain how help is at hand for families

News and comment

Caring for a child with a life-shortening condition turns family life upside down. Parents don’t always know what support is available to them and so may not get the help and advice they so desperately need. Together for Short Lives has produced a series of three films which aim to reach out to families caring for a child with a life-shortening condition so they know they are not alone.

The films feature two parents who share their personal experiences so other families caring for seriously ill children can hear about different ways we provide support through their Helpline, advocacy service and family community.

Mum Tory said: “Finding someone who could help us was a massive weight off my mind.

Mum Lizzie said: “It’s nice to know you’re not on your own.”

Julia Hodgson, Practice and Service Development Manager for Together for Short Lives says: “Families caring for a seriously ill child often feel isolated and alone. Being an expert in your own child’s care doesn’t mean you are an expert at navigating the complex children’s palliative care system. The Together for Families Freephone Helpline and advocacy service offers much needed information, help and support to families caring for children with life-shortening conditions and our family community helps families feel connected.”

If you are parent or carer who looks after or knows a child or young person who is expected to have a short life and you would like advice and support please contact the Together for Families Helpline free on 0808 8088 100. The helpline is open from 10am until 4pm, Monday-Friday. Outside of these hours and on Bank Holidays, you can leave a message on an answerphone and we’ll return your call as soon as we can.

The films will be launched on social media throughout the week from Monday 18 April. Please share the films widely so families in need know where to come to for help and advice.
