Welsh Government announces additional £4.3m of in-year funding for hospices

News and comment

Yesterday, the Welsh Government announced an additional £4.3 million of in-year funding for both adult and children’s hospices alongside a new approach to commissioning hospice care in Wales.

The funding is on top of the £3 million annual uplift to hospice funding announced in the 2025/26 Welsh Budget and is being provided to help hospices meet the challenges caused by rising energy costs, workforce shortages, and increasing demand and complexity of care.

Reacting to the additional funding for hospices, Nick Carroll, Chief Executive of Together for Short Lives said:

“I welcome the Cabinet Secretary’s announcement of additional in-year funding for hospices. Tŷ Hafan and Tŷ Gobaith do an incredible job of helping children living with serious illness and their families to access care outside of hospital and make special memories together. With costs spiralling due to rising energy prices, workforce pressures and increasing demand, this support will go a long way in helping both children’s hospices to meet their needs.

“This investment means that, in 2025/26, nearly 25% of the children’s hospices’ care costs will be covered by statutory funding. This is an encouraging step forward, but with the Senedd election approaching, it is essential that the next Welsh Government builds on this momentum and secures a fair and sustainable, funding settlement for the long term.

“To ensure Tŷ Hafan and Tŷ Gobaith can plan with confidence and expand their reach, statutory funding must grow in the next Senedd term reaching 30% of care costs by 2030.”
