X Factor winner’s charity single in aid of Together for Short Lives

News and comment

This year’s X Factor winner’s single will be in aid of leading UK children’s charity Together for Short Lives. 49,000 children and young people have life-threatening or life-limiting conditions, but many of these children and their families are still not getting the support they need. Together for Short Lives is the UK charity that speaks for these children, and everyone who supports loves, and cares for them. When children are unlikely to reach adulthood, the charity aims to make a lifetime of difference for them.

The two X Factor finalists will perform their prospective winners single live during The X Factor’s spectacular final in Manchester.

The song will be available to download once The X Factor winner is crowned on the 9th December.

Syco will donate 100% of its profits from the sale of each CD single and download to Together for Short Lives. This is expected to be at least £1 for each CD and 20p for each download.

I've worked with these charities and I know how much help they need. So this is what we're going to do this weekend: we're going to try and raise a million pounds...I'm going to kick this off with a £250,000 donation

The single will be the fifth charity release from The X Factor, following last year’s cover of the Rose Royce classic ‘Wishing On A Star’, 2010’s cover David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’, 2009’s cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘You Are Not Alone,’ which supported Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and 2008’s ‘Hero’ which raised over £1.3 million, again for the ‘Help For Heroes’ charity.

Simon Cowell, who has worked closely with Together For Short Lives for many years, says

‘Together for Short Lives is such an inspiring and important charity for so many kids and their families who really need help and support. These hospices are really happy and positive places and are a complete lifeline for so many families. Having worked with this charity for many years I have been able to see first hand how they have impacted so many lives, and I’m delighted that The X Factor’s winner single sales will go directly to helping them.”

Barbara Gelb, CEO of Together for Short Lives says

“We are so delighted to benefit from the X Factor Charity single this year. Together for Short Lives is the leading UK charity that speaks for all children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions and all those who support, love and care for them. Our work helps to ensure that children can get the best possible care, when and where they need it. We work with the specialist services that care for these children and families, including children’s hospices, and every single bought will make a huge difference. These services are a real lifeline and your money will help to support families with the challenges of daily life so children and families make the most of precious time together.”
