David Widdas is a Consultant Nurse, and Trustee for Together for Short Lives. David has developed and worked in two large NHS Community Children’s Nursing Teams which offer palliative care, community nursing care and continuing care packages for children with complex care needs. David works widely in the West Midlands networks, including palliative care and long-term ventilation, developing practice and standards to drive up care consistency and quality.
David has worked with Together for Short Lives on many of its key publications, in particular the care pathway series. David has been an adviser to the Department of Health on Children’s Continuing Care and worked on the Department of Health’s Transition and Community Children’s Nursing projects.
David’s research and evaluation work has focused on children’s community nursing and continuing care. He is an Honorary Research Fellow with Coventry University and is studying for a PhD, looking at what works well in complex care packages from a parent and child’s perspective. This is also with Coventry University and funded by a WellChild Charity Grant.
In November 2015, David was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours list in recognition of his work on palliative care.
