Children and parents anticipating the death of a loved family member or friend experience anticipatory grief. Parents may become so focused on their own grief and the care of the dying person that they cannot recognize the needs of children experiencing the same grief. These guidelines explain children’s understanding of death and provide developmentally appropriate terminology and activities to assist a child through anticipatory grief, the dying process and the death of a loved person.
